Rest in Peace Ken Garcia

Yesterday the world lost a wonderful man by the name of Ken Garcia. You may recognize him from any number of his TV or movie appearances, you might know him from his Krav Maga classes, or maybe you have taken a few acting classes from his studio. I had the distinct pleasure of working with him on a number of projects and his work always impressed me. The first time I met him was in 2007 on the Wasteland production location. We rode in the bed of a truck doing 60 through the desert terrain then joked for a while about how close each bump got us more and more nervous about the lack of seat belts in truck beds. His great sense of humor and punctuality made sure that we had plenty more opportunities to catch up for every meeting, table-read, audition, or shoot day that I saw him at because we were usually the only ones there on time. I scored 2 movies that he was in and his performances never ceased to amaze and inspire me. I read with him at the Urgency audition that I felt he crushed and was then disappointed when the studio cast the part themselves. I listened every time his lines came up at a table read to hear how the lines carried weight with only the sound of his voice. He always offered to buy me a drink whenever we were at any outing. The last time I saw him was at the Wasteland DVD signing where we spent most of our time joking and laughing with each other.  Well in case you’re listening KG:

Yup, that’s us in the background.

This is the only pic I could find of us together. Oddly enough I think this was the last time I saw you. As punctual people we spent a lot of time chilling before everyone else got there. It was great to know you as an inspiration, teacher, peer, and most importantly as a friend. You never let anything stand in your way and accomplished more than most people ever will. Your talent, skill, ambition, determination, and hunger for life was something we could all learn from. I already miss you and can’t wait to hang and chat it up again… while we wait for everyone else. All my condolences to everyone else whose lives you touched. I know they all miss you as much as I do.

I scored this for your scene in Wasteland and I think it is a beautiful song for a great performance. Have a listen and we all miss you.

  1. Hi Sal. I know we met briefly at kens funneral. Our son has a habit of googling his dad and today he showed me how much is out there. I found this site and tribute. Knowthat ken believed you to be an amazing talent and a beloved friend. He talked about you all the time. Lovingly. Thank you for this tribute. I don’t have these pics or a copy of Project Purgatory so this is special to us. Hope you are well. And thank you

    • Ronny I’m so thankful to know that. He really was not only a great talent to work with but he was a great friend. I wish I had more pictures to share but all I have are the great stories and the memories of how awesome he was. It means a lot to me that you and your family found this and to be quite honest the memory of our brief meeting is something that I hold very dearly. I think about him quite often and I’m certain I’m not the only one. All I can offer are these words and I can promise never to forget who he was and how he inspired me. Thank you Ronny and I send you and all of your family the warmest regards, the deepest condolences, and the sincerest of thanks.
